THE B&V STORY
The Story Behind the B&V Brick Cutter
The B&V Brick Cutter began as a Danish invention created by the brothers Børge and Vagn Sørensen in Haderup. Their robust design, strong craftsmanship, and focus on precision created a professional tool that would continue to be used for generations.
Since 1984, HF Smede- og Maskinværksted A/S has continued the production with the same focus on quality, durability, and reliable daily use.
DANISH CRAFTSMANSHIP SINCE THE ORIGINAL B&V DESIGN
A Danish Invention That Lives On
The story of the B&V Brick Cutter begins in Haderup in Central Jutland, where the brothers Børge and Vagn Sørensen operated their smithy for many years.
They were known far beyond the local area as skilled craftsmen and inventors with an impressive ability to develop practical mechanical solutions.
Over the years, they created a wide range of inventions, but one of them would become especially significant: the B&V Brick Cutter.
The brick cutter quickly earned recognition among bricklayers and contractors for its robust construction, high quality, and precise cuts. It was developed for professional use and built to withstand many years of daily work on construction sites.
After approximately 15 years of production, Børge and Vagn Sørensen decided that the time had come to transfer production to new hands.
Built for daily work. Designed to last.
Professional Use
Created for Professional Bricklayers
The original B&V Brick Cutter was developed as a practical working tool for professional bricklayers.
Its construction reflected the values of its inventors: simplicity, durability, precision, and ease of use.
The machine was designed for daily use under demanding conditions. This combination of solid workmanship and practical functionality helped establish the B&V name among professional users.
Many older B&V Brick Cutters remain in use today. Their continued service reflects the strength of the original concept and the quality with which the machines were manufactured.
1984 Transfer
A New Manufacturer Carries the Story Forward
On 1 April 1984, the sales and production rights were transferred to Henning Futterup, founder of HF Smede- og Maskinværksted A/S.
In the transfer letter, Børge and Vagn Sørensen expressed their confidence that Henning Futterup would continue manufacturing the B&V Brick Cutters to the same high standard.
Henning Futterup is a highly skilled young manufacturer whose craftsmanship is beyond doubt. We are therefore confident that our B&V Brick Cutters will continue to be manufactured in top quality.
This trust became the beginning of B&V Brick Cutter production at HF Smede- og Maskinværksted A/S. Since 1984, the company has continued production with the same focus on quality, durability, and precision.
Continued Production
Produced Since 1984
HF Smede- og Maskinværksted A/S was founded by Henning Futterup in 1981.
When the company took over production of the B&V Brick Cutter in 1984, it marked the beginning of a tradition of continuing the product with respect for the original design and the qualities that had made it known among professional bricklayers.
Although production has been modernised over the years, the philosophy remains the same:
- High quality
- Long service life
- Precision
That is why many older B&V Brick Cutters are still in use on construction sites today.

Archive Documentation
Part of Denmark’s Industrial Heritage
The supplied archive also includes original Danish patent documentation connected to the early B&V Brick Cutter.
The document reflects the formal development work behind the original invention and forms an important part of the product’s history.
The patent document shown is Danish Patent No. 137745 and is dated 9 October 1978.
It is presented here only as historical documentation and not as a current patent or legal exclusivity claim.
From Workshop to Wider Use
From Haderup to Europe
What began as a Danish invention from a small workshop in Haderup has since become a product used far beyond Denmark’s borders.
For decades, HF Smede- og Maskinværksted A/S has supplied B&V Brick Cutters to both the Danish market and export markets in Europe, where they remain known for durability and operational reliability.
For more than four decades, professional bricklayers have chosen the B&V Brick Cutter because it is developed for daily use under demanding conditions and built to last for many years.
Legacy
The Legacy of Børge and Vagn Sørensen

HF Today
Second Generation
Today, the company is continued by Jakob Futterup, who represents the second generation at HF Smede- og Maskinværksted A/S.
The company’s goal remains the same as in 1984: to manufacture B&V Brick Cutters in the high quality established by Børge and Vagn Sørensen, while continuously developing and adapting the products to today’s professional users.
For more than 40 years, HF Smede- og Maskinværksted A/S has been the manufacturer of B&V Brick Cutters. This makes the company the direct continuation of the original production that began with the two inventive brothers in Haderup and continues to this day.
